Job Title: Telecommunications Officer, Dispatcher & Records Clerk
Department: West Mifflin Police Department Services
   
   
Successful applicant will split work time performing the function of dispatcher and/or records clerk when needed.

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma or its equivalent.  Conviction of a felony is automatically disqualifying unless the applicant has been pardoned. 

Valid Pennsylvania Drivers License.

Applicants who meet the above requirements and who have previous experience as a 911 Telecommunications Officer are preferred.

Applicant must also operate audio-visual monitoring systems and must be physically capable of distinguishing colors and tones.

Must be physically capable to assist in the booking of prisoners when necessary.

It is the policy of West Mifflin Borough Police Department that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass background checks as well as drug screen, and physical examination, which may include both a vision and hearing test before a job offer is extended.

Duties:

  • Receives requests for service from the public and dispatching police, units as necessary.
  • Operates public safety communications radio equipment; constantly monitoring the status and availability of public safety units.
  • Operates computers of various types: CAD (computer-aided dispatch) systems, CLEAN/NCIC, GIS, PEMA, Motorola radio systems, and others as needed.
  • Enters and modifies information into local, state and national computer database.
  • Ask vital questions and provide pre-arrival instructions for emergency calls.
  • Receives emergency 9-1-1 calls for police service; interrogates callers, determines appropriate responses, provides entry into a CAD system and dispatches assistance.
  • Notifies other agencies for required assistance such as Allegheny County emergency including Mutual Aid Departments, Allegheny County Police, Sheriff’s Office, and Emergency Services field units.
  • Dispatches municipal police agency field units.
  • The Dispatchers perform other related duties as required (i.e. assist with the booking of prisoners).  Dispatchers are required to wear distinctive uniforms as designated by the Chief of Police.
  • Act as custodian of departmental documents and records.  Establish and maintain filing system, control records and indexes.
  • Assists in the collection and maintenance of data for relevant departments.
  • Inputs data to standard office and department forms, complies data for various reports.

  • Geography: Candidates must understand jurisdictional boundaries, as well as thoroughfares, landmarks, public buildings, and waterways within the jurisdiction.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed indoors in standard office environment with an occasional requirement of lifting heavy objects (e.g., supplies, records, and the like.).

In addition to standard office environment, the incumbent may have:

  • exposure to firearms
  • exposure to crowds
  • exposure to potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons
  • necessity for frequent sitting for extended periods of time, and
  • exposure to close contact with computer monitors
