West Mifflin, Pa. May 12th 2015. The West Mifflin Borough Police Department added a new tool to their crime fighting arsenal this week with the implementation of a Digital Evidence Management system.
Department Officers are quickly becoming accustomed to the new Digital Evidence Management system known as “Crime Fighter BEAST” (Bar Coded Evidence Analysis Statistical Tracking).
Using Bar Code labeling throughout the Department’s Evidence holding facilities and on evidence items, department staff can now better track property and inventory.
“With just a scan of a bar code, we can quickly find an attached report, other property, or an exact storage location.” Said Chief Ken Davies.
Quickly phasing out the older system, Officers are already finding this a much more efficient way to log many items of evidence at once.
The new system makes audits far more efficient, and creates media rich, manageable, streamlined evidence logs.
The whole system serves as an ongoing audit experience, chain of custody and a remarkably detailed user audit log are maintained within the system. Spot checks are done in a matter of minutes.
While the Department has always had tight, efficient, stringent Evidence controls, the new system is an exciting development, will save Officers time and the department a lot of energy in general.
Taking the system even further, the new system ties tightly in with the Allegheny County Lab systems, and soon the Pennsylvania State Police. Information submitted to labs is quickly relayed via bar codes and matching reporting standards.
Within Western Pennsylvania, the West Mifflin Police Department joins the Allegheny County Police Department, Borough of Baldwin Police Department, Mt. Lebanon Police Department, Scott Township Police Department, North Strabane Township Police Department, and the Pennsylvania State Police in their use of the Crime Fighter BEAST software.
The West Mifflin Police Department serves West Mifflin Borough a heavily residential area. West Mifflin is home to one of America’s oldest traditional amusement parks, Kennywood Park; the fourth largest shopping mall in the region, Century III; advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology research and development facility, Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory; monorail manufacturer Bombardier; US Steel’s Mon Valley Works – Irvin Plant; Community College of Allegheny County’s South Campus; the Allegheny County Airport; and various other businesses and industries.
The Crime Fighter BEAST software is a product of the Porter Lee Corporation, based in Schaumburg, IL
Porter Lee Corporation started development in
1995 of a new generation of evidence management products for Police Agencies and Crime Labs.
Mike Evans and Tim Smith were contracted by the Northern Illinois Police Crime Lab (NIPCL) to develop software that would satisfy ASCLD (American Society of Crime Lab Directors) requirements for Crime Labs.
